about

A winter Thursday at WNUR 89.3 Fmin Chicago, amidst stacks of dusty hardcore 7"s and Part Time Sucker Radio bass madness, MC Zulu (Dominique Rowland) proposed a cover version of Bad Brains' Leaving Babylon. A rootsy bit from their 1982 self-titled album, Searchl1te and MC Zulu both blasted it as angst-ridden kids, so why not remake it as angst-ridden adults? Dojo (Dominic Johnson) of the New Millennium Orchestra, dressed in a tux and a furry hat with ear flaps straight from playing an Italian opera, came through the studio late night to lay down the viola.

The b-side, Mathrock Riddim, is Searchl1te's remix of the Yes anthem Heart of the Sunrise.

Sick cover art by Jeekoos...an analog collage comprised of tapes of Part Time Sucker Radio recorded by Jeekoos when he first started tuning in.

Ryan Searchl1te Chicago

“[Searchl1te] ditches the brainless foursquare beats that serve as cha-cha diagrams for the honkiest segment of the club population …His tracks are made of hearty, pulse-pounding stuff: mile-high quantum-overdrive synth pulses, queasy stereo-phase effects from your best panic attack, and sub-sonic free falls that aim to evacuate your bowels.” — Chicago Reader ... more
